Pakistan marks surgical breakthrough with first Toumai robotic surgery in Islamabad
Islamabad, Hilal Ahmad, November 13 AZERTAC
Health experts in Pakistan have achieved a major milestone and medical breakthrough by successfully performing the first-ever robotic surgery in capital Islamabad on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in surgical innovation in the country.
A team of surgeons at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences successfully performed Islamabad’s first-ever robotic adrenalectomy. The surgery took place as part of a Robotic Surgery Master Class organized at the premium media facility of the capital under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Atif Inam Shami, Head of the Department of General Surgery at the hospital.
Well known national and international surgeons at the largest public-sector hospital in Islamabad performed robotic surgery using the state-of-the-art Toumai surgical robot developed in China. The team successfully carried out the complex robotic procedure on a female patient, demonstrating the growing role of robotic-assisted surgery in the country’s healthcare sector. The doctors from the general surgery and urology departments also participated in the surgery.
It was the first time that robotic surgery was performed at the hospital. During the surgery, the adrenal glands of a female patient were removed. The new technology will enable patients to recover faster, experience less pain, and witness improved surgical results.
On this occasion, speaking to the media, Director of Robotic Surgery at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Prof Mateen Sharif said this surgery marked the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan’s healthcare system. He said the mission was to expand robotic surgery across the country.
With the successful surgery at the Medical facility in Islamabad city hospital joined the ranks of advanced medical centers across the world using robotic technology. It will pave the way for safer, more efficient, and minimally invasive surgeries in Pakistan.
Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of one or both adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys. This procedure is performed to treat tumors, hormonal imbalances caused by excessive hormone production, or cancer. It can be done through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery or traditional open surgery, with the minimally invasive approach often resulting in less pain and a faster recovery.
