Traces of medieval settlement uncovered along Lankaran coast of Caspian Sea
Lankaran, May 18, AZERTAC
A medieval settlement has been uncovered along the Lankaran coast of the Caspian Sea.
Archaeological survey work was carried out in the Lankaran coastal area of the Caspian Sea by Samir Karimov, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the Lankaran Regional Scientific Center of ANAS and PhD in History; Anar Aghalarzade, Leading Researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology and PhD in History, Associate Professor; Winfried Held, Professor at Philipps University of Marburg; and Lâtife Summerer, expert in classical archaeology and art history at the University of Munich.
Research was carried out along the coastline near the city’s railway station, within a two-kilometer radius. The survey revealed numerous 11th–13th century glazed and unglazed pottery fragments along the shore.
Archaeologists believe the area once hosted a medieval settlement, part of which was likely submerged due to rising Caspian Sea levels.
Experts also examined the coastal area in detail and discussed plans for future large-scale archaeological and underwater research using modern methods.
