UN session discusses rhinoceros and Caspian sturgeon conservation
Baku, August 16 (AZERTAC). The 65th session of the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was launched in Geneva, the UN official website reported. Its agenda includes ivory trade and prevention of illegal rhinoceros trade.
Rhino horn trade is among the most profitable areas of the black market in many African countries, where it is valued as a form of traditional medicine.
The session, which opened on Aug. 15 and will run until Aug.19, will also discuss the situation with caviar trade of the Caspian Sea sturgeon.
CITES is not only a Convention, but also an organization designed to prevent the disappearance of wild animals and plants resulting from international trade. The Convention was adopted in Washington in 1975.
Once wild animals and plants are included on a CITES list, international trade becomes a matter of control, the level of which varies depending on the received status, ranging from controlled trade to completely banned trading of rare species of plants, endangered animals, and fish.
