UNICEF representative: 96 percent of children breathe polluted air
Baku, October 2, AZERTAC
"96 percent of children breathe polluted air. In 2021, 6,400 children died early because of air pollution," said Maria Osbeck, Senior Programme Specialist Environment and Climate at UNICEF, as she addressed the round table on "High-level national event on climate change and children" held at ADA University within the framework of the Baku Climate Action Week.
She noted that the climate change seriously impacts children.
"One in two children in Europe and Central Asia often faces heat waves, which is twice the global average. One in 10 children is at high risk of river flooding. The most dangerous is water shortage. "Unfortunately, 53 percent of children live in areas vulnerable to water scarcity," Maria Osbeck emphasized.
