Yalchin Rafiyev: Youth are source of ideas and initiatives in COP process

Bonn, June 19, AZERTAC
“Today, 1.8 billion young people in the world live with new perspectives and ideas, which relate to climate change and the fight against it. The importance of different perspectives is enormous. The process of preparing a global framework document, which was initiated by our friends in Dubai during COP28, was further expanded by us during COP29, and we have taken initiatives in this direction.
During our hosting of COP29, the conference held in Baku, we organized a series of events with the specific goal of incorporating the perspectives and ideas of young people into the development of this document. Youth are a source of useful, result-oriented ideas and initiatives in this process,” said Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev, in his address at the "COP29 and COP30 Youth Climate Representatives SB62" panel held as part of the Bonn June climate meeting.
Noting that young people are key participants in enriching this process, Yalchin Rafiyev thanked all institutions that have contributed to the efforts carried out so far in this regard, including the UN structures. He also noted that the presentations made by colleagues on the main pillars of the global framework were very useful. We believe this will serve as an important basis for the COP30 Presidency to be held in Brazil. Currently, we are handing over the leadership of this initiative to the Brazilian side.
Yalchin Rafiyev also spoke about the integration of young people into the process in Baku last year. "This remains a priority issue that we must continue to address. Youth perspectives were very useful for us when reaching agreements on climate finance, especially in generating innovative ideas. Financial issues play a decisive role both in mitigation and adaptation measures. Without finance, it is impossible to build a clear roadmap for the future. Currently, we are working closely with the COP30 Presidency on the Baku-Belem Roadmap," he emphasized.
