“If I Were a Tourist” series: The next destination is Zagatala.
Zagatala, one of Azerbaijan’s most captivating regions, stands out for its rich historical monuments and as a multicultural region. Zagatala region is located on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus. The region features a highland climate, healing springs, stunning natural scenery, rivers, and year-round recreation and tourism centers.
The region’s largest rivers, the Ganikh (Alazan) and Mukhakh (Garachay), along with slightly smaller rivers like the Tala and Katekh, traverse the area.
Zagatala region features numerous historical and architectural monuments with unique characteristics. One such monument is the 3rd-5th century “Pari Gala” (Fairy Castle) fortress, located in Yukhari Chardakhlar village.
The “Pari Gala” was built 300 meters from Yukhari Chardakhlar village, on a mountain at an altitude of 150-200 meters above ground. Though its exact construction date is unknown, researchers believe it was built during the Caucasian Albania period based on its architectural style. The fortress is situated in a highly strategic location, with all roads leading to the area clearly visible from it. It is believed that guards, upon spotting an approaching enemy army, quickly raised the tribe’s brides, daughters, and children to the fortress, keeping them there until the enemy left the area. Local legend ties the fortress’s name to its role in protecting the tribe’s “fairies” - its daughters.
This ancient region is renowned not only in Azerbaijan but also worldwide as a multicultural region. Up to 20 minority nations have lived here together harmoniously for many years. The coexistence of minority nations in Zagatala truly serves as an example of tolerance.
