Azerbaijan is determined to become one of leading countries in renewable energy
Baku, September 24, AZERTAC
“Preparations are well underway in Azerbaijan for COP29, one of the world's major events. The COP, which is one of the global UN events, annually brings together representatives of states and governments from across the world, urging for joint efforts to address climate change and eliminate its consequences. In total, about 100,000 people participate in such events. The host country of the COP normally rotates among the five United Nations regional groups,” political scientist Yalchin Hajizade told AZERTAC.
Highlighting works done for hosting COP29, Yalchin Hajizade added: “Although COP29 is scheduled to take place from November 11 to 22 this year, generally, works in this direction are carried out throughout a year. The COP29 Presidency Action Plan brings the world's most pressing climate issues and forgotten priorities to the forefront. The session will serve as a vital platform for a large audience of participants to deliberate on key issues concerning climate change. The aforementioned agenda also considers the opportunities and unique contribution of Azerbaijan in addressing climate change by hosting COP, the first such event in the Caucasus.
Yalchin Hajizade also highlighted the partnership between COP Presidencies Troika (COP28-UAE, COP29-Azerbaijan and COP30-Brazil), to improve cooperation and continuity between current and future COP Presidencies, leading to increased climate action in support of ‘Mission 1.5°C’.
Speaking about Azerbaijan’s achievement in renewable energy, the political scientist emphasized: "Azerbaijan is determined to become one of the leading countries in renewable energy and utilizes its rich wind and solar potential for this purpose. Azerbaijan is committed to developing its renewable energy potential, which is an important part of the country's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050. In Azerbaijan, major infrastructure projects have been implemented in green energy. Thus, we cooperate with companies and countries owning extensive and growing experience in this area. President Ilham Aliyev designated the liberated territories as a green energy zone and all infrastructure projects are in progress on the basis of green energy criteria.”
