Azerbaijani FM meets with incoming UN Resident Coordinator

Baku, July 6, AZERTAC

On July 6, Jeyhun Bayramov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Dmytro Shlapachenko, the newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator in the country.

The meeting focused on the existing Azerbaijan-UN cooperation agenda, the development of cooperation, as well as regional and international security matters.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov highlighted the successful development of the long-standing and fruitful cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN across all areas. He noted that next year will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UN, adding that this landmark milestone provides an excellent opportunity to further strengthen these ties.

Touching upon Azerbaijan’s active contribution to addressing global challenges, the officials noted that Azerbaijan has successfully hosted a number of significant events, particularly highlighting the successful hosting of the COP29 Conference and the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) as evidence of the importance the country attaches to multifaceted cooperation. In this regard, the officials noted that the signing of the Framework Document on Sustainable Development Cooperation for 2026–2030 has marked a new stage of cooperation with the UN system. Additionally, the Azerbaijani foreign minister stressed that Azerbaijan is poised to host more events of global significance.

The meeting further discussed Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable bridge between Europe and Asia, the projects implemented to expand transport and communication links, the growing importance of the Middle Corridor, as well as the development of cooperation with the countries of Central Asia, including new opportunities offered by the C6 cooperation format.

Highlighting regional security, the Azerbaijani top diplomat briefed the UN Resident Coordinator on the post-conflict realities in the region, Azerbaijan’s ongoing large-scale reconstruction efforts in the liberated territories, and the steps taken to ensure the safe and dignified return of formerly internally displaced persons to their native lands.

Regarding the Azerbaijan-Armenia reconciliation process, FM Bayramov stressed the importance of making full use of the existing opportunities to achieve lasting peace.

Incoming UN Resident Coordinator Dmytro Shlapachenko expressed his pleasure at the opportunity to work in Azerbaijan and reaffirmed the UN’s willingness to enhance cooperation across all sectors and strengthen the partnership in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.

The meeting also addressed other bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest.
