Diplomatic World Sweden highlights Khojaly genocide on 34th anniversary
Stockholm, February 26, Nargiz Jafarli, AZERTAC
The Diplomatic World Sweden portal, a platform for politicians and foreign embassy staff, published an article commemorating the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, one of the gravest tragedies of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s.
The report focused on a commemorative event held at the Raoul Wallenberg memorial, where participants laid a wreath and observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims. The memorial, symbolizing humanism, civic courage, and resistance to genocide, provided a fitting location for the tribute.
The article recounted the tragedy, noting that on the night of February 25–26, 1992, over 600 civilians - including women and children - were brutally killed, thousands were injured or went missing, and many families were wiped out. Human Rights Watch described the massacre as the gravest tragedy of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, potentially amounting to a war crime or crime against humanity.
The article also highlighted international recognition of the tragedy, noting that 17 national legislatures, 24 U.S. states, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Organization of Turkic States have condemned the massacre as a crime against humanity and genocide. The European Court of Human Rights qualified the actions as “acts of particular gravity which may amount to war crimes or crimes against humanity.”
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark Zaur Ahmadov emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory, promoting international awareness, and establishing lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The article also highlighted the international awareness campaign “Justice for Khojaly!” initiated by Leyla Aliyeva.
