Dry start to Wimbledon but flash floods forecast for Thursday
Baku, June 25 (AZERTAC). The skies should be clear for the start of play at Wimbledon today, but forecasters have warned of more flash flooding as torrential downpours are expected by Thursday.
Flooding, storms and persistent showers have blighted the country in recent weeks putting this June in line to become one of the wettest in 100 years.
The Environment Agency issued five flood warnings last night, four in the North East and one in the North West.
This was a sharp drop from the number in place over the weekend, but with the ground already saturated after a month of wet weather, the flooding risk when the rain returns will be higher than that usually posed by heavy showers, forecasters said.
Downpours and thunderstorms across northern England, Scotland and parts of Wales are predicted for Thursday, according to MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association.
Senior forecaster Matt Dobson said: "Flash flooding is certainly likely in parts of the UK on Thursday
"After a very warm and humid start to the day, there will be an increasing risk of rain in central and northern areas, which is where flooding is most likely."
But the only risk of rain at SW19 on Monday is from the briefest of showers which could materialise during the afternoon, but these would be unlikely to hold up play for long, forecasters said.
Temperatures in London are forecast to reach the early 20s today as Andy Murray begins his annual quest for glory.
There is the further risk of occasional showers on Tuesday afternoon and temperatures are set to reach a muggy 24C on Wednesday.
