Global Sustainable Transport Conference due in Ashgabat

The first Global Conference on Sustainable Transport will be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, November 26 - 27.
The Conference will be held in accordance with the UN Resolution on development of sustainable transport and multilateral transit corridors, ensuring full cooperation of all modes of transport, adopted in December 2015 at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.
The conference agenda includes a wide range of topical issues, such as the sustainable transport and environmental change, energy and transport, urban transport system and road transport links between cities and villages, investment in the transport sector and its financing, international cooperation in the transport sector and its legal base, the development of multilateral transport corridors, infrastructure and traffic safety.
Several international conventions and agreements will be signed during the conference, which is to be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
"This is the first in the history of the UN global conference dedicated to the development of transport, which reflects the growing awareness of the important role played by transport in the promotion of sustainable development and the fight against climate change," said United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbo.
He pointed out that unsafe transport often causes fatalities. Each year road accidents kill 1.25 million people. Most of the victims are people in developing countries. Transportation also accounts for about 25 percent of all the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
