Khojaly genocide victims commemorated in Rome

A commemorative event marking the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, co-organized by the Azerbaijani Embassies to the Holy See and Italy, as well as the Cultural Center in Rome, has been arranged at the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giuseppe a Via Nomentana church in Rome.
The event, attended by embassies’ staff, local community, as well as the Azerbaijanis living in Rome, began with a minute of silence in honor of the victims.
Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Holy See Ilgar Mukhtarov highlighted the history and consequences of the Khojaly genocide, which remains one of the most grave crimes committed against the civilian population of the 20th century, noting that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenian armed forces attacked Khojaly and massacred 613 civilians and take 1275 hostages.
Ambassador Ilgar Mukhtarov also highlighted the ongoing peace process, prospects for normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
In his remarks, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Italy Rashad Aslanov provided insights into the location and population of the city of Khojaly, drawing the attention of the event participants to the fact that the Khojaly genocide stands as one of the most horrific crimes against humanity in modern history, characterized by extreme brutality against a defenseless civilian population.
Additionally, the Azerbaijani ambassador stressed the significance of the "Justice for Khojaly!" international awareness campaign initiated by Leyla Aliyeva to restore justice and prevent the reoccurrence of similar crimes in the future.
The event also featured performances of classical works by the Italian "UniMarconi" choir and the choir and orchestra of the Cappella Musicale Costantina, including "Matem" (Mourning) or "Funeral Ode" by the renowned Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev.
