Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis meets with President of Latvia

A delegation led by Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, visited the Milli Majlis on April 22.
The President of Latvia first familiarized himself with the plenary hall of the Milli Majlis. The delegation then toured the memorial hall named after National Leader Heydar Aliyev and viewed exhibits showcasing various periods of the life and political career of Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The Latvian President signed the Guest Book.
An expanded meeting between the two sides took place afterward.
Emphasizing that this is President Edgars Rinkēvičs’ first visit to Azerbaijan in his current position as President, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova expressed her confidence that the meetings and discussions held during the visit would open a new chapter in bilateral relations and provide a strong impetus for their further development.
Highlighting the importance of high-level reciprocal visits and regular political dialogue for the development of bilateral relations, Sahiba Gafarova noted that in this regard, reciprocal visits by the two countries’ Presidents and their regular meetings at various events create an environment conducive to discussing issues of mutual interest.
Addressing inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries, the Speaker noted that close cooperation has been established, with reciprocal visits and parliamentary friendship groups playing an important role.
The Latvian President was briefed on the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the country’s history of independence and parliamentary development, as well as the structure and functioning of the parliament.
President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs shared his impressions regarding his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev and the discussions held during his visit.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan is regarded as a valuable strategic partner for both Latvia and the European Union. The Latvian President expressed support for the advancements that have been made in the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, hailing the tangible progress achieved. He also underlined President Ilham Aliyev’s substantial efforts in advancing this peace process.
Highlighting the significance of the issues discussed and the documents signed during his visit to Azerbaijan, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed his confidence that the signed documents and agreements reached would soon yield positive results. Underlining the importance of inter-parliamentary ties, the Latvian President stressed the significance of regular visits and the exchange of experience between members of parliament and parliamentary friendship and working groups.
He also shared his perspectives on the prospects of bilateral relations in such areas as economy, education, investment, information technologies, agriculture, tourism, and other sectors.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
