Strasbourg remembers Khojaly massacre victims
Paris, February 24 (AZERTAC). A commemorative ceremony to mark the 22nd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide was organized by the Azerbaijan`s mission to the Council of Europe at the Strasbourg-based Saint Pierre-le-Jeune church.
The ceremony was attended by diplomats, representatives of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities, general public, Azerbaijani and foreign students studying at the Strasbourg University, as well as Azerbaijanis living in the region of Alsace.
Speaking at the event, permanent representative of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Emin Eyyubov pointed out that Armenians committed the act of genocide against Azerbaijani civilians on February 26, 1992 in Khojaly also referred to as the “Srebrenica of Caucasus”. The Armenian troops massacred old people, children and women in Khojaly.
The Ambassador noted that Armenia continues to occupy 20% of the Azerbaijani lands. The diplomat noted that although Azerbaijan reaffirmed its commitment to resolution of the conflict in a peaceful manner and on the basis of international legal norms, Armenia did not give up its military and aggressive policy.
On the Justice for Khojaly campaign, Eyyubov said Azerbaijan is seeking Justice for Khojaly from peace loving countries and nations.
The Ambassador noted that a number of countries recognized the Khojaly tragedy as a genocide and described this fact as a success of the Azerbaijan`s foreign policy.
The French composer Pierre Thilloy said he created his Khojaly 613 work shortly after hearing about the Khojaly genocide.
During the ceremony, a group of soloists of the philharmonic orchestra of Bordeaux and Strasbourg performed Khojaly 613 adapted for the string quartet as well as masterpieces by Khayyam Mirzazadeh and Giacomo Puccini.
