World Population Day, Planet at 7 billion

In 1989, the United Nations (UN) Governing Council, focusing its attention on developing plans and programmes addressing the importance and urgency of population issues, recommended July 11 is observed by the International community as World Population Day.
My how we`ve grown since July 11, 1987 — as a global population. Back then there were five billion of us crowding this planet. The United Nations declared July 11 of that year "Five Billion Day" to mark the estimated date on which we reached that milestone.
World Population Day will be observed across the globe including Pakistan raising awareness among people about global population issues today (Monday). The day will be observed with the theme `World at 7 Billion` highlighting importance of family planning in relation with gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights.
A number of activities including seminars, conference, discussions, educational information sessions and essay competitions are arranged both by public and private organizations across the country every year.
Two years later, the UN declared every subsequent July 11 to be World Population Day as an effort to increase awareness of issues such is the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health, and elderly care.
National Trust for Population Welfare (NATPOW) Chief Executive Officer Iftikhar Durrani told this agency that a grand function will be arranged in collaboration with Planning and Development Division on the day. However, the District Population Welfare Office, Islamabad, has also finalised weeklong activities to mark World Population Day from July 11 to July 27.
