Youth Educational Center marks United Nations Day
Baku, October 26 (AZERTAC). The Youth Educational Center held an awareness campaign dedicated to the United Nations Day. The theme of the observance is “Serving you 65 years”.
The purpose of the one week event was to brief the people about the activity of the United Nations, whose aim is to promote peace, security and social welfare of people.
During one week the center organized an awareness campaigns for the young people in Baku, Ganja, Sumgait, Mingachevir and Fizuli, briefed members of the general public on the activity of the international organization.
October 24, 2010 is the 65th birthday of the United Nations. Delegates from 50 of the world`s countries, large and small, strong and weak, and in different stages of political and social development, worked together to develop the U. N. Charter. They envisioned an organization which would preserve peace, advance justice and be a permanent structure for international cooperation.
Most of those 50 countries had ratified the Charter by October 24, 1945. In a ceremony on that date, the new organization officially came into being. Two years later the U. N. General Assembly designated each October 24 as United Nations Day. The General Assembly asked that this observance be “devoted to making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations, and to gaining their support for the work of the United Nations.”
The United Nations Organization is an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace.
There are currently 192 member states, including nearly every sovereign state in the world. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year.
