Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) has held a commemorative event on the 29th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy.

The event kicked off with a minute`s silence for the tragedy victims.

In his speech, Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC Aslan Aslanov provided an insight into the history of the Black January events.

“National leader Heydar Aliyev came to Azerbaijan`s representative office in Moscow and condemned the bloody events. He protested the policy of the totalitarian Soviet regime,” the chairman of the Board said.

Aslan Aslanov noted that the tragedy was given a political and legal assessment at the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev.

The speakers highlighted the role of the 20 January events in the history of the Azerbaijani people`s struggle for freedom.

The speakers also said important decisions had been adopted by President Ilham Aliyev towards solving the problems of martyr families.
