Ancient Balakhani – a modern tourist route with a renewed look VIDEO
Baku, June 26, AZERTAC
In AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” feature, the next destination is the Balakhani settlement of Baku.
Balakhani, located in the northwest of the capital, is one of the oldest settlements rich in historical and cultural monuments. Baku’s first oil wells were drilled in this settlement.
Before the oil boom of the early 20th century, Balakhani held a strategic position due to its location on the Great Silk Road. For centuries, this place served as one of the main hubs on the caravan route stretching from China to Spain. Balakhani is home to many historical monuments dating back to the eras of the Shirvanshahs and the Safavids.
The large-scale renovation efforts in the Balakhani settlement, which began in 2018, were completed in 2020. Today, the settlement captivates visitors with its renewed appearance. The settlement stands out for its distinctive architecture, including ancient monuments, elegant buildings, and narrow streets.
As a result of the renovation efforts, Balakhani has officially been designated as a new tourist route.
