ANNIVERSARY OF 20 JANUARY TRAGEDY COMMEMORATED ABROAD
Baku, January 19 (AZERTAC). The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Toronto has organized an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 20 January tragedy.
The event brought together representatives of the Azerbaijani community, Canadian MP, chairwoman of the working group on Canada-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary ties Yasmin Ratansi and member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.
Opening the event, Ambassador Farid Shafiyev briefed the participants on the history of the tragedy.
Yasmin Ratansi described the 20 January events as a “grave crime” against the Azerbaijani people. She said only national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev gave a political and legal assessment to the events.
Other speakers at the event condemned the 20 January massacre.

A commemorative event on the 20th anniversary of 20 January tragedy was held in Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Kyrgyzstan.
The event was attended by members of the Azerbaijani community, students and journalists.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Arif Agayev described the 20 January tragedy as a “crime committed against the Azerbaijani people”. He said the day after the tragedy happened, Heydar Aliyev came to permanent representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow, and held there a press conference overtly condemning the Soviet leadership`s actions against the Azerbaijani people.
Other speakers at the event spoke of the Azerbaijani people`s struggle for independence and freedom. They also condemned Armenia`s aggressive policy against Azerbaijan.
The participants saw a documentary on the 20 January tragedy.
