Armenia should avoid steps that could undermine the peace agenda COMMENTARY

“Reactions from certain circles in Armenian society to the visit of diplomats accredited in Azerbaijan to Garabagh and East Zangezur are regrettable and raise concerns for the regional peace agenda. Garabagh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and visits by accredited diplomats to different regions of the country fall within Azerbaijan’s sovereign rights. Calls to target or pressure foreign diplomats over such visits are contrary to the principles of diplomatic relations and respect for state sovereignty,” MP Alibala Maharramzadeh told AZERTAC.
He highlighted the one-sided approaches to historical and cultural heritage that have emerged in Armenian society, noting the particular significance of the historical and cultural heritage of Caucasian Albania in this regard. The MP stressed that, rather than being subject to politically motivated interpretations, this heritage should be studied in accordance with the scientific principles of historiography and archaeology. Historical heritage should serve to promote dialogue and mutual understanding among peoples, rather than fuel political confrontation, he emphasized.
“Statements by various political and public circles in Armenia, particularly the growing revanchist rhetoric, could negatively affect trust in the region and the peace process. Armenian Parliament Speaker Ruben Rubinyan’s remarks on foreign diplomats’ visit to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory may also be viewed as interference in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs. The peace process should be based on agreements reached and respect for states’ territorial integrity and sovereignty, rather than mutual accusations. Confrontational rhetoric that overshadows progress in the peace process does not serve peace,” Alibala Maharramzadeh underscored.
The MP stressed that protecting cultural heritage is a universal principle regardless of ethnicity, urging Armenia’s political and public circles to use responsible rhetoric, avoid politicizing history, and refrain from actions that could undermine the peace agenda.
