Landslides kill 45 in SE Bangladesh due to heavy downpour
Baku, June 27 (AZERTAC). Landslides killed 45 people in southeastern Bangladesh since Tuesday evening due to heavy downpour, local authority chiefs told Xinhua over phone Wednesday.
Out of the 45 deceased, 30 were killed in Bandarban district, including 11 people from the same family, the district's administration chief KM Gariqul said.
Another 15 people were killed in Chittagong district, the district's administration chief Faiz Ahmed said.
In the last week, incessant rain has paralyzed normal life in the two districts, forcing the authorities to suspend rail and air services, local news agency UNB reported.
Landslides are frequent in Bangladesh's hilly areas during the heavy monsoon that usually runs from June to September. In June 2010, more than 50 people were killed in landslides in Bangladesh' s two southeastern districts.
