Mexico drug cartel leader arrested
Baku, May 21 (AZERTAC). Daniel Elizondo, leader of Mexico`s Zeta drug cartel has been arrested as the suspected perpetrator of the brutal killing of 49 people last week.
An army spokesman said Elizondo, known as "El Loco", or "The Madman", was arrested by troops.
The decapitated and dismembered bodies were found dumped by a roadside near the city of Monterrey in northern Nuevo Leon state.
In a statement, Mexico`s defence secretary said the arrest took place on Friday in Cadereyta municipality, where the 49 bodies were found on May 13.
However, information about the arrest was only made public on Sunday.
The crime shocked Mexico, a country where drug-related violence has become familiar since President Felipe Calderon launched a war on the cartels six years ago.
Security officials said the 43 men and six women had been decapitated and had their hands cut off, making identification difficult.
Cadereyta is on the road from Monterrey to Reynosa on the US border.
Mexican authorities blamed the killings on a conflict between rival drugs gangs - a note left with the bodies said they had been killed by the Zetas
cartel.
