Nakhchivan, October 13, AZERTAC
On October 13, Jeyhun Jalilov, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, met with a delegation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by Sunniya Durrani-Jamal, country director for Azerbaijan.
The agreements reached as part of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia were hailed at the meeting. It was noted that ensuring sustainable peace and stability in the region could create conditions for new transport and communications links, the expansion of economic ties, and deeper mutually beneficial cooperation.
Jeyhun Jalilov emphasized that Nakhchivan is a strategically significant region located at the intersection of the East–West and North–South transport corridors. He spoke about the importance of the Zangezur corridor and the TRIPP project, which is planned for implementation within this framework, in expanding regional transport links. He noted that the project would establish a land transport link between Nakhchivan and other parts of Azerbaijan, as well as strengthen connectivity with Türkiye by rail. He pointed out that the signing of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia would open up new opportunities to launch these transport routes and increase their regional importance.
Nakhchivan’s energy potential and renewable energy projects were also discussed. Opportunities to export electricity to Türkiye and access wider markets were highlighted.
The meeting also addressed efforts to develop agriculture, increase production, support farmers through state assistance, and provide subsidies. In addition, they exchanged views on harnessing Nakhchivan’s tourism potential, developing the tourism industry, and creating new production capacity in the metallurgy sector. Discussions also covered 10-year tax exemptions for entrepreneurs, improving the investment climate, and measures aimed at transforming the region into a free economic zone in the future.
Addressing the financing of the proposed projects, Durrani-Jamal spoke about the opportunities offered by the Asian Development Bank, including concessional lending. Highlighting the significance of the visit, the ADB country director for Azerbaijan underscored the importance of the information presented on Nakhchivan’s transport, energy, and economic potential.
The meeting also focused on the economic aspects of projects that could be implemented with ADB participation in the coming years and prospects for further cooperation.
