Shusha, October 9, AZERTAC
Participants in the 4th International Conference in the Baku Dialogue format on “Strengthening Trust and Developing Effective Mechanisms in Addressing the Issue of Missing Persons” visited Shusha on October 9.
The delegation first toured a residential complex, where they were briefed on the living conditions and facilities available to residents. They were informed that construction of the complex began in 2021 and that it was inaugurated on May 10, 2024. Built in the city’s traditional architectural style, the complex provides comfortable living conditions for former internally displaced persons who have returned to their hometown.
The participants then visited the New Shusha Mosque, which is currently under construction. They were informed that President Ilham Aliyev laid the foundation of the mosque in 2021. The mosque’s design symbolizes November 8, Victory Day, while its two minarets represent November, the month in which Shusha was liberated.
The guests also visited Ghazanchi Church, the bullet-riddled statues of Natavan, Bulbul and Uzeyir Hajibeyli, and Shusha Fortress. They learned about the sites’ history and restoration following the city’s liberation.
The participants also toured Shusha Prison, where Azerbaijani captives and hostages were held and tortured after the city’s occupation in 1992. They were briefed on the discovery of two mass graves at the site in 2023, containing the remains of 31 people.
The visit to Shusha concluded following the tour.
