CIS countries to conduct population censuses as close to 2030 as possible
Turkmenbashi, October 9, AZERTAC
The heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have adopted a decision to conduct the 2030 round of population censuses across the Commonwealth.
The relevant document was signed on October 9 following the CIS Summit in Turkmenistan.
According to the decision, the next population censuses in CIS member states will be conducted as close as possible to 2030. The governments of the respective countries have been instructed to take measures to support the 2030 World Population and Housing Census Programme.
The Council of Heads of Statistical Services of CIS member states has been tasked with agreeing on and approving, in 2027, a list of socio-economic and migration indicators to be included in national census programmes. This will ensure the comparability of key census results across the Commonwealth.
As noted in the document, the previous decennial UN population census round, covering the year 2020, concluded in 2024. Within the CIS, national censuses were conducted in nine of the ten member states. In total, 215 million people were enumerated, representing approximately 85 percent of the Commonwealth’s total population.
In 2025, the UN approved the core documents for the 2030 World Population and Housing Census Programme.
To ensure the comparability of results, the CIS Interstate Statistical Committee, following consultations with national statistical offices, proposed continuing the practices applied during the 2020 round.
These practices include adopting a decision by the Council of Heads of State; preparing a standardized list of indicators to harmonize the measurement of migration and labour force data; developing methodological recommendations for incorporating relevant questions into census questionnaires; and formulating table formats for the exchange of information among member states.
