SHEKI HOSTS INT’L WOMEN’S CHESS TOURNAMENT
On October 15, Sheki State Drama Theatre hosted opening ceremony of the international chess tournament among women organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Tourism, National Olympic Committee, Azerbaijan Chess Federation and Sheki Administration on the occasion of the State Independence Day of Azerbaijan.
The tournament with a prize fund of $9 thousand attracted 10 chess players from Azerbaijan (Nargiz Umudova), Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, Romania and Slovenia.
Faig Hasanov, the Vice-President of the Azerbaijani Chess Federation and Mahir Mammadov, the Director of the International Tournament mentioned addressing the ceremony that such a prestigious women’s chess tournament was last carried out in Azerbaijan 17 years ago.
After the official opening, the first round of the tournament was played.
The winner will be announced on October 23.
