AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” feature: The next destination is the Central Botanical Garden.
One of the places that attracts both local enthusiasts and foreign tourists in the capital is the Central Botanical Garden, often called the “green heart” of Baku. This place, which houses and displays a wide variety of plant species, is a popular destination for researchers and nature lovers.
The Central Botanical Garden, also known simply as the Botanical Garden, was founded in 1936. After large-scale restoration and construction work, the garden reopened its doors to visitors in the fall of 2024. President Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and family members attended the opening of the Central Botanical Garden.
Following the restoration work, the garden regained its vitality, and as a result of these efforts, the area of the garden was expanded from 39 hectares to 45 hectares. A three-block greenhouse, a lake complex, and a viewing platform have been constructed in the garden for the purpose of growing plants.
A modern greenhouse built for rare plant species from around the world is a noteworthy attraction here. Bridges and wide alleys full of greenery have been built for pedestrians. Outdoor relaxation in a comfortable environment, in the recreation areas equipped with appropriate facilities, can be a source of spiritual comfort for many people. Separate playgrounds have been designed for families with children.
The renovation of the ancient crescent-shaped administrative building, now equipped with modern lighting and irrigation systems, preserves both the modern and historical value of the garden. This space has become not only an important site for conducting scientific research focusing on the flora of Azerbaijan, but also a favorite destination for city residents and visitors, contributing to their comfort and enjoyment.
