Baku, April 10 (AZERTAC). Nine blue whales have died after they became trapped in shifting ice patches off the southwest coast of Newfoundland.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is calling the deaths a massive loss to marine life.

It is not known how many of the endangered animals are currently in the Atlantic population, but Parks Canada says between 20 and 105 are spotted each year in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The blue whale is the largest animal that ever lived on Earth. It is also the loudest animal on Earth. These enormous mammals eat tiny organisms, like plankton and krill, which they sieve through baleen. They live in pods (small groups).

Blue whales grow to be about 80 feet (25 m) long on average, weighing about 120 tons (109 tons).
