On September 21, the International Coastal Cleanup Day, the Buzovna beach was cleaned of from trash and debris as part of a large-scale “Protect the Caspian Sea!” environmental campaign, which was attended by representatives of prestigious companies, government agencies, various organizations and hundreds of volunteers.

The campaign was organized by Coca-Cola, Bakcell, PAŞA Bank, with the organizational support of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, ASAN Volunteer School, with support of the State Advertising Agency, Embassies of the USA and European Union, ADA University, “AzEkol” Company, “Carlsberg Azerbaijan”, “Nargis” magazine, ASAN Radio”, “Khazar TV”, AFFA and Azerbaijan Cycling Federation. Within the frames of the campaign, more than 700 people have cleared coastal areas of 3 tons of garbage.

The garbage collected during the “Protect the Caspian Sea!” Campaign was sorted as follows: 1815 kg of food, building materials and glass, 211 kg of plastic, 30 kg of cardboard and paper, 15 kg of plastic bags.

Note that many countries of the world, celebrate the 21th of September as the International Coastal Cleanup Day. This is the world's largest volunteer effort aimed at collecting of trash and debris from coasts of inland waters. For this purpose, tens of thousands of people voluntarily clean coastal areas from trash and debris. Azerbaijan takes part in this international environmental campaign for the 9th year in a row.

“Coca-Cola” plays an active role in solving the pressing challenge associated with household waste. For 9 years now, we, together with many partners in Azerbaijan, are cleaning coastal areas of household waste after the end of the beach season, and thereby urge people to be more responsible for the environment. We are pleased that Azerbaijan actively participates in this international movement every year, and thus we contribute to the cleanliness of the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan,” said Elshad Farzaliev, Coca-Cola's PR and Communications Manager for the Caucasus Region.

“Every year, we are happy to observe active participation of people, the youth in particular, in this environmental campaign. This is not just an environmental action, because it is also a great celebration with a colorful program. Bakcell is ready to continue supporting this big great initiative,” said Suheyla Jafarova, Director of PR and corporate communications at Bakcell.

The head of the volunteer sector of the State Agency for Public Service and Social Innovations under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sahil Mammadli, noted the contribution of such projects to youth development: “The number of volunteers is growing every year. Participation in the current campaign of 500 ASAN volunteers is a clear indication of the interest of youth in environmental projects. Environmental campaign also plays an important role in shaping a socially responsible individual. By means of this action, young people become aware of their responsibility.”

Almost 3 tons of household waste collected on Buzovna Beach as part of the “Protect the Caspian Sea!” environmental campaign were partially sent for recycling, while the rest was sent to the Balakhani landfill. Held annually at the end of the beach season with the participation of youth, employees of companies and their families, this coastal zones cleaning initiative promotes the principles of improving the environment, raising public awareness and environmental responsibility in the country. All the participants of the campaign were provided with transport, sports shirts, refreshment beverages, food and the cleaning means by the organizers.

It should be noted that over the past 9 years almost 45 hectares coastline of the Caspian Sea was cleaned of more than 35 tons of waste. Information about the waste collected at the cleaned coastline areas is forwarded to the “Ocean Conservancy” international organization. This information is further reflected in the international country reports related to global water reservoir cleaning.
