Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan expanding joint initiatives over shallowing of Caspian Sea

The inaugural meeting of the Azerbaijan–Kazakhstan Working Group on studying the causes of the Caspian Sea level decline and preparing adaptation measures was held in Astana on April 24.
During the meeting, attended by delegations led by Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Rauf Hajiyev and Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan Mansur Oshurbayev, participants discussed the ongoing decline in the Caspian Sea level, the climatic and human-induced factors driving this process, and its potential impacts on ecosystems and coastal regions. The speakers underscored the need to enhance coordination between the sides.
The sides also agreed to conduct joint research, expand data exchange, and outline future cooperation priorities.
The next meeting is expected to be held in Azerbaijan in the second half of 2027.
