Blue Origin unveils Blue Ring: A multi-purpose spacecraft platform
Baku, October 17, AZERTAC
Blue Origin, the space venture founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced plans for a new spacecraft platform known as Blue Ring. Developed by Blue Origin’s business unit called In-Space Systems, Blue Ring aims to provide a range of services including hosting, transportation, refueling, data relay, and logistics, according to TS2 Space.
The platform will serve both commercial and government customers, offering in-space logistics and delivery capabilities, as well as cloud computing services. Blue Ring’s services will be available for missions in medium Earth orbit, the cislunar region, and beyond.
According to Paul Ebertz, Senior Vice President of In-Space Systems, Blue Ring addresses two of the most challenging aspects of spaceflight today: growing space infrastructure and increasing mobility in orbit. By providing cost-effective access to a variety of orbits and critical data, Blue Ring aims to ensure the success of its customers’ missions. The platforms will be powered by a hybrid propulsion system that combines chemical and solar-electric technologies. Blue Origin will design and manufacture most of the propulsion system.
Although specific dimensions were not disclosed, Blue Ring will feature roll-out solar arrays spanning approximately 144 feet to generate electric power. Each Blue Ring platform has the capacity to carry payloads weighing over 6,660 pounds. Notably, the engines used in Blue Ring will not be repurposed from Blue Origin’s current engine line.
In addition to this announcement, Blue Origin is undergoing a leadership transition, with former Amazon devices chief Dave Limp set to become the new CEO on December 4th. The development of Blue Ring demonstrates Blue Origin’s continued commitment to advancing space exploration and expanding its capabilities in the commercial space industry.
