EU signs agreement on funding 16 new projects with Azerbaijan`s NGOs
Baku, February 8 (AZERTAC). European Union (EU) and Azerbaijan`s NGOs signed an agreement on funding 16 new projects as part of European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights, and Non-State Actors in Development Programme.
Speaking at the press conference related to the projects head of the EU office in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Roland Cobia stated that the combined EU contribution to these projects is 2,7 million Euro. These projects cover a wide range of areas from creating better opportunities for vulnerable groups such as disabled children or blind persons, to providing independent media coverage on key issues, supporting the activities of civil rights campaigners, or promoting more awareness on the need to protect the environment, said Cobia.
EU representative said the projects will be realized not only in Baku, but also in the regions of Azerbaijan. “The EU`s support to civil society dates back to before 2007. But we believe that the current instruments are the most focused and flexible yet. This makes the EU the largest foreign donor to civil society in Azerbaijan, something we are extremely proud of. Civil society is an irreplaceable partner in the EU and in the European governance process as the voice expressing the needs and opinions of European citizens”.
A presentation on EU support to civil society in Azerbaijan was made as part of the event.
