Fifteen more Bulgarian comics made accessible to people with visual impairments
Baku, October 27, AZERTAC
Fifteen more Bulgarian comics have been adapted for people with visual impairments in Braille, audio and electronic text, bringing the total number of accessible works produced through initiatives by Artessible Association to 28, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.
Artessible said that adaptations were created under the association’s “Art in Action” initiative, which uses creative workshops bringing together sighted and blind participants to develop ways of conveying visual information through words.
Seven Braille sets, each comprising four volumes, have been printed under the title “Stories in Pictures for Yesterday and Tomorrow,” with assistance from the Louis Braille 1928 National Community Centre for the Blind. Audio versions of all 15 comics were recorded with the participation of more than 40 volunteers and distributed on 100 USB flash drives. Electronic text versions are available through the centre’s digital library.
The Braille books and audio recordings are being distributed to organisations and centres serving people with visual impairments in Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Vratsa and Kazanlak.
Artessible said accessible comics remain an emerging field internationally, with limited opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to experience the medium. Participants in the workshops also jointly created a new comic, illustrated by artist Maya Bocheva, which will be presented separately.
