Baku, April 6 (AZERTAC). The Azerbaijan Union of Cartoonist in conjunction with Tabriz and Ardebil Cartoon Associations annually hold a wide range of events to mark the release of the first issue of “Molla Nasreddin” satirical magazine on April 7.

This year the International Cartoon Contest is dedicated to the 130th birthday of Azim Azimzade, a renowned Azerbaijani painter and cartoonist. The contest will be wrapped up on April 15. The award ceremony and the exhibition are slated for the end of April in Baku.

“Molla Nasreddin” was an Azerbaijani satirical periodical published in Baku, Tiflis and Tabriz.

The periodical was founded by Jalil Mammadguluzade, a famous Azerbaijani writer. The name "Molla Nasraddin" was taken from the 13th century Muslim cleric Nasreddin who was remembered for his funny stories and anecdotes. The main purpose of the magazine was to satirically depict various social shortcomings, such as inequality, cultural assimilation, and corruption; and to ridicule backward lifestyles and values of the clergy and religious fanatics.
