OIC Secretary General issues message on World Environment Day

Baku, June 5, AZERTAC
Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hissein Brahim Taha has issued a message on the occasion of the World Environment Day.
The message reads: “The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is marking, together with the global community, June 5 as the World Environment Day. This year the World Environment Day is drawing the attention of all nations to search for solutions and best practices in confronting plastic pollution, which is turning into a daunting menace to the environment worldwide.
Plastic pollution is a problem, created by the humankind in its bid for comfort and economic growth, but exercised at the cost of its own environmental security and better future perspectives.
The World Environment Day has been an occasion for the OIC to call attention to the need to live in a more responsible and caring way for the environment, in full conformity with norms and principles of Islam. The environmental issues have secured a conspicuous place in the OIC agenda and of its Member States. This reality is well reflected in the Organization’s relevant strategic documents and resolutions of the Summits, Council of Foreign Ministers and the Islamic Conferences of Ministers of Environment.
This approach is a clear manifestation of the OIC’s strong belief in the need for concerted and consistent actions to be taken by the Ummah, when it comes to addressing environmental challenges, including the urgent one of overwhelming plastic pollution.
Furthermore, hosting in 2022 of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Climate Change (COP 27) by Egypt, along with the next 28th session (COP 28) to be held in 2023 in the United Arab Emirates are, indeed, further indications of the Islamic world’s growing involvement in the global efforts to combat environmental threats.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, thereby, strongly urges Member States and the international community to further prioritize the issue of environmental protection in their domestic and foreign policies, and encourage comprehensive interstate cooperation for the sake of making the world a better and safer place to live in.”
