UN high-level meeting highlights Azerbaijan’s experience in inclusive urban planning

Parvana Valiyeva, Member of the Healthcare Committee of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis and Co-Chair of the Global TB Caucus for the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, participated in an Interactive Multi-Stakeholder Hearing for the 2026 High-level Meeting on HIV/AIDS held at the United Nations Headquarters in the United States.
Moderated by UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, the hearing included representatives from the European Union, UN member states, the World Health Organization (WHO), and several UN agencies.
Representing the Parliamentary Platform on Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, Parvana Valiyeva said the world is at a critical stage in the fight against HIV, adding that the meeting’s decisions will guide national planning in the coming years. She highlighted the importance of safe and resilient cities, noting Azerbaijan’s support for inclusive urban development and accessible healthcare, including “Fast-Track Cities” initiatives.
Parvana Valiyeva stressed that amid changes in global financing, a key priority is ensuring a more sustainable and nationally owned HIV response. She emphasized that an integrated approach to tuberculosis and HIV is effective and sustainable, highlighting the key role of parliaments in turning commitments into action through legislation, budgeting, and accountability, as well as in ensuring their implementation.
