U.S. CONGRESSMEN URGE TO ABOLISH SECTION 907
Washington, April 30 (AZERTAC). Members of the Working Group on Azerbaijan, functioning in the USA Congress House of Representatives, have sent a letter to the chairperson of the United States Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Mrs. Nita Lowey.
In the letter signed by co-chair of the Working Group Bill Schuster, Solomon Ortiz, as well as Congressmen Michael McMahon and Eddy Bernice Johnson, the lawmakers called on the head of the Subcommittee, considering the state budget for 2011, to support the programs of assistance strengthening the relations between the USA and Azerbaijan. In their opinion, some important points should certainly be considered. And, according to them, the resources to the separatist regime in Nagorno Karabakh should not be allocated. The Congressmen who have expressed anxiety in this connection, have marked that in Nagorno Karabakh, as internationally recognized territory of sovereign Azerbaijan, there is no any ethnic Azerbaijani. The conflict is the extremely sensitive question both for Armenia and Azerbaijan. Some groups use will of the Congress for reaching of their political goals. Congressmen have reminded that the USA, as the co-chairman country in the OSCE Minsk Group, has to hold neutral position in the conflict. The Subcommittee should refrain from step which will break this neutrality and harm relations with Azerbaijan which is a reliable partner of the USA.
Members of the Working Group on Azerbaijan have urged to abolish the 907 Section of the Freedom Support Act of 1992. They have marked that this Section prohibiting rendering assistance to the government of Azerbaijan, is a serious interference to the expansion of strategic partnership between the two countries.
Congressmen have marked that in the case when one of the priorities of the foreign policy of President Obama is improvement of relations with the Muslim world, it should be intensified even more the relations with Azerbaijan which is a reliable partner of the USA in the field of energy safety, combating international terror and other spheres.
Members of the Working Group have urged Mrs. Lowey to consider all these moments, and include all this in the budget of 2011.
