Cooling vest could help bystanders save cardiac victims from brain damage

Baku, July 12 (AZERTAC). In an unfortunate event when someone suffers from cardiac arrest or a stroke, medical professionals can decrease the likelihood of neurological damage by lowering the core temperature of the body. However, having access to these chilled water blankets and cold drip catheters quickly, is a big challenge if someone lives far away from a hospital. This is where the portable cooling vest can help, which can be administered by anyone.

The prototype vest is being developed by a team of researchers at the Hohenstein Institute in Germany, led by Professor Dr. Dirk Höfer. The vest is embedded with water-filled cooling pads, which are connected to a vacuum-pressurized sealed metal container containing silicate minerals. Once the valve in the system is opened, the vest could turn the water into near-freezing temperature very rapidly.

Furthermore, the vest cools itself without using any electricity or power. Höfer and his team hopes that the vests could be made readily available in public areas to use in emergency situations.
