IDEA organizes cleanup campaign on the Kura river

Baku, May 19, AZERTAC
The International Dialogue for Environmental Action (IDEA) Public Union organized a regular cleanup campaign along the banks of the Kura River and its junction with the Caspian Sea.
More than 100 IDEA volunteers participated in the campaign held in Neftchala District. Using equipment compliant with sanitary standards and special boats, the volunteers cleaned the Kura River and its banks of various household wastes, synthetic fishing nets that cause mass fish deaths, and other illegal, makeshift fishing tools that disrupt the river's ecosystem.
These types of tools and the accumulated household waste pose an even greater threat during the current months, which coincide with the fish spawning season. As fish gather in this area—where the river merges with the sea—to reproduce, both their capture and the pollution of the shallow waters and coastal areas they select for spawning directly endanger the future biological resources of the Caspian.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts, volunteers removed more than 2.5 tons of waste and delivered it to the Neftchala District Solid Waste Landfill. During the campaign, the team informed the locals about harmful effects of dumping waste into the river and using destructive fishing practices on the environment and wildlife of both the Caspian Sea and the Kura River.
IDEA expressed its gratitude to the State Border Service for providing technical support, as well as to every nature enthusiast who contributed to the campaign and the protection of a healthy environment.
The Public Union continues to call on citizens to support nature conservation efforts, keep shorelines clean, and actively join future cleanup initiatives as volunteers.
