International Youth Forum in Baku discusses international cooperation against colonialism
Baku, May 1, AZERTAC
An international Youth Forum titled “Strengthening the Role of Youth in the Postcolonial Era,” organized by the Baku Initiative Group, has commenced in Baku on May 1.
For the first time, the forum brings together young diplomats, researchers, international law specialists, healthcare experts, representatives of pro-independence political parties and organizations, heads of youth organizations, and university students from both current and former colonies. Participants from 17 countries are taking part in the event, sharing experiences and familiarizing themselves with Azerbaijan. Foreign students and researchers studying in Azerbaijani universities are also participating.
The youth will exchange views on establishing an international solidarity network and cooperation platform to address the modern consequences of colonialism and neocolonialism. They will also work on developing more structured and effective international cooperation mechanisms focused on common objectives.
Discussions will further cover issues such as the end of colonial administration and neocolonial policies in affected territories, the acceleration of self-determination processes, and the inclusion of additional territories in the UN Decolonization List. Participants will also address challenges faced by local populations in colonial contexts, including forced migration, social inequality, unemployment, limited access to education, and restricted political participation.
The forum also highlights the long-term impacts of colonial rule, including cultural and identity erosion, economic exploitation, environmental damage, and the effects of nuclear testing on public health and future generations.
Extensive discussions on these and other topical issues are planned within the framework of the forum.
