RECEPTION TO CELEBRATE AZERBAIJAN NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AND ITS 2004 GRANTEES
With help from the CRDF, the Azerbaijan National Science Foundation was established on March 12, 2002 in Baku to develop Azerbaijan’s scientific-engineering community through the support of research and development projects on a competitive merit-driven basis. Since then, the ANSF has moved quickly to establish itself as a science-funding organization poised to contribute to the overall strengthening of the science and technology communities and market-based economy in Azerbaijan.
The U.S.-Azerbaijan Bilateral Grants Program grantees are the first to receive awards under the program, designed to fund research by joint teams of Azerbaijan and U.S. scientists. The grants, which average $35,000, will provide the recipients with up to 24 months of research support. A list of grantees follows at the end of the release. Funding for the program comes from the U.S. Department of State.
The Azerbaijan National Science Foundation is private nonprofit organization established in 2002 by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation. The ANSF’s goal is to develop the Azerbaijani scientific-engineering community’s potential through the support of research and development projects. The foundation funds research competitions and conducts training programs based upon the principle of merit-based peer review by the Azerbaijan scientific community, increases cooperation between the research and development communities of the United States and of Azerbaijan, and promotes alternatives for scientists formerly involved in weapons research. The ANSF is headquartered in Baku.
The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) is a nonprofit organization that promotes international scientific and technical collaboration, primarily between the United States and Eurasia, through grants, technical resources and training. The CRDF supports exceptional merit-reviewed research projects that offer scientists and engineers alternatives to emigration and help prevent the dissolution of their home countries’ scientific and technological infrastructure. The foundation also advances the transition of foreign weapons scientists to civilian work; helps to move applied research to the marketplace by teaming U.S. companies with scientists in other countries; and strengthens research and education in universities abroad. The CRDF is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, with offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, and Kyiv, Ukraine.
