Snow causes disruptions at Munich and Vienna airports
Baku, February 20, AZERTAC
Heavy snowfall has caused major disruptions at Munich and Vienna airports. Munich Airport announced on its website that departures and arrivals could be delayed or canceled altogether, according to MarketScreener.
Already on Thursday, 100 flights were canceled, and by Friday morning, 50 more flight cancellations had been reported, according to a spokesperson.
Vienna Airport even temporarily suspended operations. According to the airport, at least 150 flights were canceled. The airport further stated that only around midday could some departures and arrivals possibly resume. However, delays were expected to continue throughout the day.
During the night, around 20 centimeters of snow fell at Vienna Airport. The winter services had been in continuous operation since Thursday evening, it was reported. So far, about 1,000 truckloads totaling around 15,000 tons of snow have been cleared.
There were also problems on roads in Bavaria and Austria. In Bavaria, there were numerous accidents – especially in Upper Bavaria and Swabia, emergency services were increasingly called out, according to police headquarters.
In southern Upper Bavaria alone, there were around 75 incidents due to snowfall and icy conditions, a police spokesperson said. Most accidents resulted only in vehicle damage. In total, twelve people sustained minor injuries. Sometimes drivers crashed into guardrails, sometimes they ended up in ditches. Snow breakage was also a problem: several trees fell onto roads as a result.
A serious accident occurred late Thursday evening on the Munich ring motorway. A father driving off the A99 at Aschheim exited onto a parking lot, lost control on the wintry road, and crashed into a parked semi-truck. The car slid under the trailer of the truck. The 51-year-old driver, his 47-year-old wife, and their ten-year-old daughter were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
