Swedish delegation informed of religious situation in Azerbaijan
Baku, November 29, AZERTAC
Chairman of the Milli Majlis committee for public associations and religious organizations Siyavush Novruzov has met with chair of the Swedish Agency for Support to Faith Communities Ake Goranssons.
Novruzov said that Azerbaijan was the first democratic state in the East. “Azerbaijan is a secular, unitary and constitutional state. 95 per cent of population are Muslims, while 5 percent are Christians, Jews and representatives of other religions. There are 2250 mosques, 14 churches and 8 synagogues in Azerbaijan. They were completely overhauled by the government of Azerbaijan and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has also repaired churches, synagogues, and mosques in Bosnia, Vatican, Pakistan and Georgia. Representatives of all religions live in peace, friendship and prosperity in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is a sample of multiculturalism and tolerance,” Novruzov said.
He also touched upon the occupation of 20 per cent of Azerbaijani lands by the Armenian armed forces. Novruzov underlined that historical monuments and mosques were fully destroyed here. “But an Armenian church in Baku was repaired and is being preserved as a historical monument,” he added.
Ake Goranssons said that Sweden is home to about 70 religious communities.
