Ukraine conflict discussed at Global Baku Forum

The Ukraine conflict has been high on the agenda of the 4th Global Baku Forum. At a session entitled “Ukraine as a watershed for regional security” participants discussed internal and external aspects of Ukrainian security, and looked at the roles and challenges for the international community.
Ambassador of the Irish Institute of International & European Affairs Francis O’Donnell said international organizations such as the United Nations and the OSCE had to clarify their roles in settling conflicts in Ukraine and other regions of the world.
Former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said it was important that all countries remain committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said Donbas, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, South Ossetia and Abkhazia conflicts were difficult to solve. “These separatist regimes are run by marionette governments.”
Former Polish President Bronisław Komorowski pointed to negative impact of Ukraine conflict on regional development. Any military conflict has its implications on neighbor countries, and this leads to negative political, economic and social consequences, he said.
Former Russian Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov underlined the necessity of establishing dialogue in order to solve the Ukraine crisis.
State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania Daniel Ioniţă emphasized the importance of taking resolute efforts to solve the Ukraine conflict as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.
Former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said all countries had to show good will in order to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict.
