Uzbek prodigy Nodirbek Abdusattorov claims World Rapid Chess crown
Baku, December 30, AZERTAC
Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov captured the World Rapid Chess Championship, scoring 9.5 points in the 13-round Swiss event in Poland Tuesday.
The 17-year-old Uzbek prodigy won the second tiebreak blitz game against GM Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia.
Dethroned champion Magnus Carlsen, who lost to Abdusattorov in the first round of the day, settled for third place despite matching Abdusattorov’s final score.
Abdussattorov became the youngest world rapid champion to date.
The Uzbek star had a spectacular tournament in which he defeated some of the world’s strongest seasoned players, including Magnus Carlsen.
With this remarkable victory, Abdusattorov stripped Carlsen of the title of world champion in rapid chess and of the prestige of holding all three chess crowns (in classical, rapid and speed chess) at the same time.
