Azerbaijan, Gambia discuss prospects of cooperation
Baku, May 18 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani ambassador to Marocco Sabir Agabayov met with the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Relations with Compatriots of Gambia Mamburi Njie to discuss prospects of cooperation.
The meeting focused on the issues of establishing relations between the two countries in various fields, as well as organizational issues on the visit of the Gambian President Yahya Jammeh to Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani envoy expressed confidence that the upcoming visit would create good opportunities for extensive discussion of bilateral ties and international issues. The ambassador also updated the Gambian side about the culture, geography of Azerbaijan, international relations, Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
Touching upon the Azerbaijan-Gambia relations, Azerbaijani envoy thanked the Gambian government for supporting Azerbaijan`s stand at the UN and the country`s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013.
On behalf of Azerbaijan`s minister of foreign affairs , Mr. Agabayov congratulated Mr. Njie on his election to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Relations with Compatriots of Gambia and handed over the Azerbaijani minister`s letter of invitation to him.
In his turn, Mamburi Njie thanked for invitation and hailed Azerbaijan`s cooperation with international organizations including the UNO and Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
The Gambian minister said the government of Gambia attaches great importance to developing relations with Azerbaijan. He said Gambia is keen to boost cooperation with Azerbaijan not only in politics, economics but also in the fields of culture and education. The minister said Gambia takes a fair stand on Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict and supports peaceful resolution of the problem within the international norms and principles.
At the end of the meeting, books reflecting Azerbaijan`s history, geography, tourism opportunities, as well as Nagorno Karabakh were handed over to the Gambian Minister.
