AZERBAIJAN PRESIDENT ATTENDS CEREMONY TO MARK 90th ANNIVERSARY OF BAKU STATE UNIVERSITY
Baku, November 2 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has attended a solemn ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of the Baku State University, BSU.
The President was accompanied by his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva.
The event started with the performance of Azerbaijan`s anthem by a university choir.
President Ilham Aliyev made a speech at the ceremony to praise BSU`s role in the country`s life.
“The Baku State University has a good and great history. Founded in 1919, the university has played an important role in all-round development of Azerbaijan during the past 90 years,” said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
“The Baku State University made a valuable contribution to overall development of Azerbaijan in different periods. Alumni of the Baku State University made a valuable contribution to prosperity of our country by their activity. Great Leader Heydar Aliyev was Baku State University alumnus and in all periods - in 1970s-80s and in the capacity of President of independent Azerbaijan - made huge efforts to develop the Baku State University”
“Today, the material and technical base, one could say, of all higher educational institutions of Azerbaijan meets the highest standards. All state higher educational institutions have been repaired. It is an evidence of the fact that Azerbaijani state, as always, attaches great importance to education”
“The fact that military expenditures are followed by education ones shows the Azerbaijani government`s priorities and this is a vivid evidence of our policy”. “Because”, he added, “the main condition for development of every country is the level of education...Neither natural resources, nor geographical condition - though these factors are very important - ensures this condition. The main conditions are the level of education, scientific and technical progress, the importance given to education and educational reforms. We have chosen this way as well,” said Azerbaijani leader.
The President stressed necessary measures will be further taken in the country to improve the educational system and to develop the level of education.
BSU`s Rector, MP Abel Maharramov spoke of the university`s history and current activities.
The rector said the university`s Scientific Council decided to award President Ilham Aliyev with BSU`s honorary doctor title. Abel Maharramov presented the President with a mantle of the honorary doctor.
Other speakers at the event included rectors of the Moscow State University, Turkish Ataturk University, Tbilisi State University, Tehran University and Kazakhstan`s Lev Gumilev Eurasian University.
The ceremony brought together over 40 scholars from foreign countries, including Russia, Turkey, Germany and Georgia and heads of higher educational institutions.
