AZERBAIJANI AMBASSADOR MAKES HIS REMARKS ON KOSOVO CASE
Washington, December 4 (AZERTAC). Head of Azerbaijani mission to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev spoke Thursday during hearings in the United Nations International Court of Justice in Hague, which deliberates the “accordance with international law of the unilateral declaration of independence by the provisional institutions of self-government of Kosovo”.
Mehdiyev presented Azerbaijan`s official stance on the problem. He lingered round norms and principles of the international law.
Referring to a number of documents, rulings of the International Court of Justice itself, ambassador stressed the importance of territorial integrity of states, defining limits of the right to self-determination, impossibility of unilateral secession from independent state in the international law. He highlighted the role of UN Security Council in the armed conflicts.
Mehdiyev noted all countries have to respect the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, internationally recognized borders, and non-interference,
Mehdiyev expressed his hope that the non-binding decision of the Court would contribute to strengthening of the rule of law and increasing role and effectiveness of international relations.
The court hearings will run until December 11. The International Court of Justice will announces its advisory opinion within a couple of months.
