Azerbaijani language presented at Language Fair in Sofia

A Language Fair was held in the square in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia. Traditionally organized, the fair featured 20 different European languages presented by 23 institutions. Three of the languages presented, including Azerbaijani, belonged to non-EU member states.
The event was organized by the Representation of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation in Bulgaria, together with language and cultural institutes belonging to the EUNIC Bulgaria network, as well as other cultural entities.
The Azerbaijani Language and Culture Center also participated in the event, presenting the Azerbaijani language and culture to visitors. A language game specially prepared for this year, titled “Find the Similarities!”, was also showcased at the Center's booth. In the game, participants identified similar words in Azerbaijani and Bulgarian. The Azerbaijani equivalents of words widely used in Bulgarian, such as “chanta” (bag), “jorab” (sock), “tavan” (ceiling), “shorba” (soup), and “pakhlava” (baklava), attracted the attention of participants.
The language game aroused interest among children, schoolchildren, and adults alike. According to the organizers, the game provided an entertaining way to demonstrate the similarities and interconnections between the two languages.
Interest in the Azerbaijani language grew noticeably at this year's fair. In addition to schoolchildren and university applicants, the Center's booth was visited by students enrolled in various specialties. They inquired about opportunities to learn Azerbaijani, the educational process, Azerbaijan and its culture, as well as the opportunities created by knowing less widely studied languages.
It was noted that participation in the Language Fair is part of the activities of the Azerbaijani Language and Culture Center aimed at promoting the Azerbaijani language and culture in Bulgaria, as well as directing young people toward the Turkology major at Sofia University and opportunities to study Azerbaijani within this specialty.
Direct communication with schoolchildren, applicants, and students creates conditions for them to become acquainted with Turkic languages and cultures and obtain information about future educational and professional development opportunities.
The events held as part of the Language Fair serve to increase interest in learning foreign languages and strengthen ties between different cultures.
