BAKU HOSTS CONFERENCE ON MIGRATION AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Baku, November 17 (AZERTAC). The US and UN human rights organizations and Azerbaijani government co-organized Monday a conference entitled “Migration and human trafficking”.
The event focused on cooperation between the Azerbaijani government and international organizations on migration and fighting human trafficking.
The event participants praised the fact that so far Azerbaijan has not been mentioned in annual reports on trafficking in persons and migration released by the U.S. State Department.
Resident legal advisor of the US Embassy in Baku Peter Strasser assessed this as a result of the Azerbaijani government`s work to fight human trafficking.
Official of the International Organization for Migration Vasiliy Yujanin said global migration problem increases continuously. According to him, there are 200 million migrants across the world. He also added the process of migration should be regulated both in accordance with relevant international laws and legislation of every country. He also underlined the necessity of joint cooperation to eliminate the problem.
Head of the office of the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights in Baku Vladlen Stefanov praised the fact that Azerbaijan joined the international migration convention.
Official of the US Department of State Lorna Grenadier said victims of human trafficking should be given asylum. She also noted that those who are engaged in human trafficking must be punished.
